This week we kicked off our 2 week study on colors. We also moved forward on our assessing and working towards beginning our differentiated, small group guided reading and writing program program Here's a closer look at what we did ...
SIGHT WORD: a
LETTER OF THE WEEK: Ss. Practice proper letter formation, always starting at the top, or middle for lowercase letters. Have your child name some words that begin or end with the letter sound.
READING & PHONICS: We talked about the parts of a book, making predictions and retelling events in a story. We distinguished between letters and words. And we began identifying how many syllables are in words.
WRITING: This week we worked on writing our sight word in a sentence (or more) focusing on becoming more confident in using 'phonetic spelling' or sounding out those bigger words we want to write to express ours thoughts. We also focused on the importance on leaving spaces in between our words when writing sentences.
MATH: Comparing Sets (alike/different, more/less), Sorting (by shape, size & color)
THEMATIC INSTRUCTION: This week we jumped into our Crazy About Colors unit. The students learned a song for each color of the day to help them learn how to spell and read their color words. I bet your child can sing you a few of these songs! We read many books about different colors, talked about things we see in the world that were our color of the day, and enjoyed a delicious colorful snack everyday. Ask your student about the story we read titled “Little Blue and Little Yellow” If you would like to make play-dough at home to retell the story, check your student’s blue folder. I have included instructions and a recipe on how to bring the learning home! This week we also focused on the story "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" we sequence the story, acted out the story and on Thursday we even made cookies of the characters in the story! On Friday the characters went missing. OH NO! We had a blast running around campus trying to track down all our characters as we learned about the various places and people in our school who help us (ie the principal, librarian, etc.).
THINGS TO ASK YOUR YOUNG SCHOLAR:
- Can you sing me one of your color songs?
- Can you write a sentence for me using the word 'a?' (don't forget to focus on leaving spaces in between words)
- What colors do you need to make green?
- Also please be sure to review letter sounds with your child as you are driving in the car, giving them a bath, walking to the park -- have fun with it!
UPCOMING DATES:
- Tues. 9/3: TIE DYE DAY We will wear smocks, to protect our clothes. However, it might be a good idea to wear older uniform clothes, just in case. Parents are welcome to send in a white shirt to tie dye as well. We will be wearing these shirts on field trips throughout the year.
- Fri. 9/6: RAINBOW DAY We will be wrapping up our study of colors with a day of learning fun!
