Our week in K was 'MOOOO-valous!" as we continued our farm unit and focused on one of our favorite farm animals: cows. The highlight of the week by farm was our visit to Fog Willow Farm where we got to feed a goat, sheer a sheep, pet a bunny, hold an egg straight from the chicken coop, and of course pick a pumpkin. Here's a closer look at what we did ... READING: Sight Word - 'he' Letter(s) of the Week - 'Dd' PHONICS: __at & __am words reviews Long and short vowel sounds. Identifying rhyming words. We looked in-depth at cows and wrote about what cows, have, eat and live. We also compared and contrasted pigs and cows discussing their similarities and differences. Made a writing graphic organizer on pigs and wrote about what pigs have, where they live and what they like to do. We painted pigs. But the highlight of the week by far was having the students come up and share their own pig facts and add their picture to our online 'All About Pigs' bulletin board. Thank you parents for helping your young scholar utilize technology to research and collaborate with their classmates about pigs. THINGS TO ASK YOUR YOUNG SCHOLAR: What word rhymes with hat? Ham? What is a daddy pig called? Mommy pig? Baby pig? What else do you know about a pig? Please help your scholar complete their answers to these questions in complete sentences. Please be sure your child bring a disposable lunch and come to school dressed in their tie-dye t-shirt with good walking shoes. October 30th - The 50th Day of School!! Students (& parents) are encouraged to come to school dressed in 50's attire as we spend the day looking at life long ago. Families are invited to join us for a sock hop and root beer floats from 12-12:30pm. This week we welcomed fall as we concluded our apple unit. We tasted apple treats, graphed apples, weighed apples, wrote about apples, read about apples and even baked apples. Here's a closer look at what we did ... Graphing and Analyzing Data Identifying Shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, trapezoid Ordering numbers 1-20 THEMATIC INSTRUCTION: This week we wrapped up our 'Let's Pretend' unit. We focused mostly on the fairytale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We learned about what the setting in a story is, or where the story takes place and who/what the characters are in a story. Each table group worked together to make puppets for the Three Bears story and we ended the week as each group cooperatively put on a puppet show retelling the important events of the story. We also read many different versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and we had great fun discussing the similarities and differences between the different versions. And who could forget all the fun we had this week on our first field trip of the year to Fairytale Town! THINGS TO ASK YOUR YOUNG SCHOLAR: Can you retell me the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears? What is the story's setting? Characters? What happened first, next, last? Practice letter sounds by giving your child a letter and asking them what sound it makes. Have fun with rhyme. Go around the dinner table trying to complete rhymes. For instance say What rhymes with hat? and go around the table having everyone give a rhyming word.
