Happy 2014. What a great first week back. It was wonderful to reconnect with the class and hear all about the fun they had while on break. Here's a closer look at what we did ...
READING:
Sight Word: what
Identifying and discussing story elements; first, next, last.
PHONICS & WRITING:
We started off the week by talking about the new year and writing about something we want to happen in 2014. Check out the video below to hear what we wrote. Later in the week we began learning about informational or 'how to" writing as we discussed "How to Build a Snowman." First we built a snowman together in class. Next, as a class we wrote about the 'first, next and last' steps we took to build our snowman. Last, the students had the opportunity to write independently how to build their own snowman.
MATH:
Addition to 10 using manipulatives.
Counting by 1's, 10's, & 5's to 110.
THEMATIC INSTRUCTION:
This week we had some wintery fun! We were all very excited to add the year 2014 to our class calendar. We had great conversations about the new year and brainstormed what types of things we want to do and accomplish this year. We also had fun learning beginning our winter unit as we discussed snowmen. We read both fiction and non-fiction books about snow and snowflakes.
THINGS TO ASK YOUR YOUNG SCHOLAR:
How do you build a snowman? What do you do first, next, last?
Using cereal or another fun counting object ... What is 2+3, 4+1, 3+1, etc.
Can you count by 5's to 110?
